These are built in line with your inflation target objectives over a recommended investment period. We invest across a diverse range of local and global asset classes in order to manage investment risk and achieve the stated long-term target objectives.
Once we have blended the asset classes together to achieve the target objectives, we then select the best fund managers in the industry to implement our asset allocation decision. We monitor the asset class and asset manager performances over the short to medium term and make changes where necessary.

Fund Description and Objective
The portfolio seeks to achieve maximum long-term growth in excess of inflation and targets returns of 6% to 7% above CPI inflation per annum (after fees) rolling ten-year periods. To achieve this it invests across asset classes including listed shares, listed property, bonds and cash, both in South Africa and globally. The portfolio may also invest in alternative assets including, for example, hedge funds and private equity. Old Mutual Multi-Managers makes the asset allocation decisions and allocates assets to specialist investment managers who manage assets within each of the asset classes. The portfolio is suitable for investors with a long-term time horizon as it has high exposure to growth assets, such as equities and property, and low exposure to income-generating asset classes. Inflation Plus 1-3% Strategy

Defensive Balanced Fund
Fund Description and Objective
The portfolio seeks to grow capital in excess of inflation and aims to have no negative returns over 12-month rolling periods. It targets returns of 4% above CPI inflation per annum (before fees) over a period of 3 years or longer. The underlying asset managers invest across asset classes including listed shares, listed property, bonds and cash, both in South Africa and globally, with the dual aim of achieving real returns while limiting downside over 12 month periods. The portfolio may also invest in alternative assets including, for example, hedge funds and private equity. The portfolio is suitable for investors with a short to medium term horizon who seek to minimise the potential for capital losses. The portfolio is offered to investors through a life policy.
Long-Term Target
Inflation +4% p.a. over the long term with no negative returns over rolling 12 months (before fees).
The Fund's performance target changed from CPI +5% to CPI +4% on 1 September 2013.
Peer Fund
We allocate the capital to a diverse, but concentrated number of asset managers, who manage the asset allocation internally. The asset managers each target real capital growth over the long term.
Managed Fund
Fund Description and Objective
The portfolio aims to outperform the median of the AlexForbes Global Large Manager Watch (AFLMW). The underlying asset managers manage multi-asset class (balanced) mandates including listed shares, listed property, bonds and cash, both in South Africa and globally. The portfolio may also invest in alternative assets including hedge funds and private equity. The portfolio is suitable for investors with a long-term time horizon as it has high exposure to growth assets such as equities and property and low exposure to income-generating asset classes. The portfolio is offered to investors through a life policy.

The Fund seeks to out-perform the median of the Alexforbes Global Large Manager Watch peers over the long term.

Specialist Fund
Money Market Fund
Fund Description and Objective
The portfolio has a benchmark of STeFI 3-month and targets returns of 0.5% p.a. above STeFI 3-month (after fees) over periods of 12 months and longer. It invests in short-term money market instruments with a duration of up to 12 months. The portfolio is offered to investors through a life policy.
Long-Term Target
The Fund aims to target 50 basis points above inflation over the medium to long term (before fees).

Medical Aid Fund
Fund Description and Objective
The Fund targets real positive returns for investors over the long term. The Fund invests across all permissible asset classes including domestic equities, bonds, cash, property and offshore assets (limits of Annexure B of Regulation 30 of the Medical Schemes Act). Due to its multi-managed nature the Fund is expected to provide similar returns to the average single-managed balanced fund over time, but with lower volatility. The Fund complies with Regulation 30 of the Medical Schemes Act.
The Fund aims to outperform CPI + 3.5% per annum after asset management fees over rolling 3-year periods with no negative returns over rolling 1-year periods. Investment objectives are not guaranteed.
